Maryland AmeriCorps Programs: 2012-2013
Funded in part by the GOSV and the Corporation for National and Community Service

Each year, the Corporation for National and Community Service sets aside federal funding to support AmeriCorps members at nonprofits and local government agencies across the country. Organizations in Maryland that are interested in hosting AmeriCorps State members, may apply through the Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism, during two specific timeframes annually.

The following programs competed in one of the two rigorous application processes and were selected to support AmeriCorps members during the 2012-2013 year. In many cases a program (listed below) may also oversee several host sites with similar goals, where AmeriCorps members serve during their term.  Programs with host site opportunities have specific deadlines for applications and partnership responsibilities.

Aim for Excellence
Baltimore City, Baltimore County

AmeriCorps members will tutor and mentor students, grow food for low-income communities, and provide environmental and nutrition education. Through the member services, students enrolled in the AVID program (Advancement Via Individual Determination) will be more likely to graduate and be accepted into college; low-income Baltimore City residents will have increased access to healthy food.

AmeriCorps Roadmap Program
Prince George’s County

Members will provide in-school academic support, after-school homework assistance, recreation, and workshops to Buck Lodge Middle School students in Langley Park. This assistance will help increase the students' academic achievement in reading, writing, and math.

ASTAR! In Western Maryland
Allegany, Washington, Garrett, Frederick Counties

Appalachian Service through Action and Resources (ASTAR) members will increase the capacity of local nonprofit organizations to provide needed direct services. Members will recruit volunteers and support initiatives focused on wellness, environmental service, academic enrichment, and mentoring.

Citizenship Maryland
Baltimore City; Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Frederick, Montgomery, and Prince George's Counties

This AmeriCorps program coordinates the efforts of existing community-based organizations to more effectively assist eligible residents in the naturalization process. Members will conduct public education, enroll Legal Permanent residents in citizenship classes, and assist candidates in completing the citizenship application process.

Civic Works – Service Corps
Baltimore City

AmeriCorps members who are recruited from local communities will tutor and mentor children, create community parks and gardens, rehabilitate houses, facilitate parent participation in public schools, and provide support to abused and neglected children.

Community Art Collaborative
Baltimore City

Members are artists and community organizers who will administer kindergarten through twelfth grade after-school arts-based programs and lead community strengthening projects in under-resourced communities throughout Baltimore.

Community Mediation Corps
State-wide

Community Mediation AmeriCorps members will conduct mediations and build capacity in local mediation centers through partnership development and community education. As a result of the members' service, centers throughout the state will be supported in providing free or low cost mediation services to resolve interpersonal, family, and community disputes.

Experience Corps - Baltimore City
Baltimore City

AmeriCorps members, aged 55 and older, will serve as literacy tutors and mentors to Baltimore City students in kindergarten through third grade.

Maryland Conservation Corps
State-wide

Housed in the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, MCC is Maryland's Environmental Corps. Members, aged 17 to 25, will perform conservation service and environmental stewardship education in Maryland state parks and on public lands.

Partnership for Adolescents on the Lower Shore (PALS)
Caroline, Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne's, Somerset, Talbot, Wicomico, and Worcester Counties

PALS AmeriCorps members increase the capacity of Eastern Shore community agencies to serve at-risk youth; they provide academic assistance and recreational opportunities to under-served youth.

Project CHANGE
Montgomery County

AmeriCorps members will build capacity within community-based organizations that provide direct services to Montgomery County residents.

Tri-County AmeriCorps Service Project
Charles, St. Mary’s, Calvert Counties

In southern Maryland, members will deliver financial resources and education; provide individualized support to special needs pre-kindergarten students; mentor high school students in the college application process; connect seniors, veterans, military service members, and people with disabilities to mental health and related services; and guide residents in accessing housing rehabilitation and weatherization services.

Volunteer Maryland
State-wide

AmeriCorps members will serve at nonprofits across Maryland. They will mobilize community volunteers and build the capacity of sites to maintain a sustainable volunteer program.
