Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism Announces Appointment of Joy Lawson-McGinnis as Associate Director

ANNAPOLIS, MD – The Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism today announced the appointment of Joy Lawson-McGinnis as its new associate director.
“I am thrilled to welcome Joy to our team, where I am certain she will bring an abundance of experience and capability to her new role as Associate Director,” said Samélia Okpodu-Pyuzza, Director of the Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism. “Her commitment to public service will be an invaluable asset to the landscape of service in Maryland.”
Lawson-McGinnis previously served as the Program Director for Playworks Mid Atlantic AmeriCorps programming. Lawson-McGinnis also served as the policy chair for the Citizens Advisory Committee of Anne Arundel County Public Schools. During this time, the district reviewed policies on redistricting, mental health, student identity, & recess. While on the Citizens Advisory Committee, Lawson-McGinnis was responsible for advising the district on its hybrid COVID reopening policies.

Driven in service by the example of her grandfather, Lawson-McGinnis has made a career in advancing the ideas & capacity of local leaders. The scale of her experience ranges from directing national and state level youth leadership development programming, to coaching local level leaders in Baltimore City and throughout the state of Maryland to make meaningful changes for the communities they serve.
